gt6 mk3
Restoration of MK3 Triumph GT6
Alongside the Lightweight project, I am presently
carrying out restoration work on a 1974 Triumph GT6 MK3.
GT6s have a number of Achilles heels when it comes
to rust which include windscreen frame, front roof, inner wings etc etc. My
brief was to do all work necessary to produce a sound basis for a decent paint
job.
I tackled the roof first and after making a simple
buck, formed a roof repair panel using an English Wheel. Before welding in this
piece I joggled an edge (or step) which would allow flush fitting and minimise
distortion during welding.
Next I turned my attention to the rear of the car
which required extensive work and several new repair panels. These included new
wings, inner wings and boot floor. Further investigation showed severe rust in
the light panel which extended into the tailgate area. I was able to remove a
sound section from the donor car which filled the bill nicely.
